Swan Lake National Wildlife Refuge near Sumner, Missouri, is one of the great quiet places of the upper Midwest. Just over ten thousand acres of marsh, prairie and bottomland hardwoods — a major stop on the Mississippi flyway. In November the geese stack up overhead in numbers that don't really translate to photos.
People come for three things: waterfowl viewing in fall and winter, white-tailed deer in October–November, and the annual draw hunts. The auto tour loop is open year-round and the headquarters area is good for an easy visit with kids.
Where to stay
There are no hotels in Sumner itself — population well under a hundred. Chillicothe is the nearest mid-sized town to the north (about 30 minutes from the refuge), and Carrollton, Missouri, is about 40 minutes south on a smooth drive down US-65. That puts Westbridge Inn & Suites within a comfortable pre-dawn drive of the refuge gate.
If you're hunting the refuge, the math works: leave Westbridge at 5:00 a.m., you're at your blind well before legal shooting time, you're back at the hotel for a hot shower and a real breakfast by 9:30.

If you've got a non-hunting partner in the party, Carrollton has the Carroll County Museum, a handful of small-town antique shops, and Baltimore Bend Vineyard about thirty minutes south. Van Meter State Park is a pleasant half-day for someone who wants a hike while you're in the blind.
